Bullets and Gummybears
I turned the porkchops in the skillet and began to tell my daughter about my day. At seventeen she was used to hearing my examples of life lessons. Today however it was she who kept it simple and put it all in persepctive.
Serious financial crunch. My husband had lost his job and although I had been looking in our area I was unable to for some reason to obtain even the most menial job and he was laid up with a serious physical disability. We made the decision to relocate to where we had planned to retire in an area that offered cheaper living and more job opportunities .. we were living on savings and manna from heaven..each day together doing what we thought would be the next right thing. That included being ultra responsible financially. We'd just made the decision to pay our last 2 outstanding debts and squeak by until the next unemployment check arrived. The program told us it was the right thing to do..to be honest and pay our debts as we promise when incured.
That meant paying off $800 worth of debt the next day. It would make us flush and owing no one. A far cry from the days of drinking and running away from creditors.
One thing we needed to do desperately was to downsize..the new house we were moving to was half the size of what we had now. We called the adult children and offered what family peices we could..and D had just that morning moved what he could of our big ticket items out to the front lawn. We were still inside discussing what we felt was fair prices for things when our neighbor pulled into the drive and asked about what we had piled out front. Just a few moments later D came back shaking his head in wonder, For Sale sign in hand... he'd just been paid $850 for the whole lot.
I looked at the flyers I'd printed up on the table and laughed..and was trying to explain to my daughter how we'd tried to do the right thing and how God will provide when you just do what's right when she started smiling that wonderfully cocky teenage grin she has..
"I get it Mom...you and Papa chose to bite the bullet and God turned it into a Gummybear!"
Sometimes I wonder who's teaching who.
